In a recent article, What Happened to National Youth Ministries and Conferences? the author documents what seems to be the demise of youth ministries as we once knew them. The publishers of youth ministry materials “exist in somewhat diminished forms as challenges and new organizations have emerged on the scene.” And, the other national organizations which have conducted conferences and youth events have either “reinvented themselves or shut down entirely.” The author cites one expert who is calling it, a “tectonic plate shifting.” The plunge began around 2008 and has continued to escalate. The article documents the downsizing of youth ministry staff and funding. Mark Ostreicher former president of Youth Specialties notes, “Most youth ministries are already [on a volunteer basis]… We are ... serving a customer base that is slowly going away.”
